Embroidered Iron
Does anyone have any tips for using an iron-on transfer pencil?
I bought two for $1.99 at Hobby Lobby. They were the only ones they had. They’re reddish pink. The problem is, if I don’t press hard enough on the paper, it doesn’t transfer when I iron it on. If I do press hard, it transfers, but the lines are way too thick. I’ve used these several times and can never find a happy medium. I use this for embroidery and when I embroider over the lines, you can see the ugly pink transfer under the thread and it looks tacky. Does anyone have any tips for me, or does anyone know of any REALLY good ones, and where can I get them?
To use the pencils that you already have, sharpen them to a finer point. Make sure that you have a firm surface under your cloth when you press it and don’t leave the iron down for too long (you might want to experiment with scraps first).
There are better ways to go though, they make markers to transfer with that either disappear on their own (usually purple) or when you lightly spritz with water (usually blue).
Another way to go is with a charcoal pencil. Trace the lines on the wrong side of the design (just like with the iron-on pencil) and then place the design over your fabric and RUB the pencil marks onto the fabric. I used this method for many years when teaching fabric painting. Just like with the red pencils, make sure you have a good point.
